Arusha, Tanzania

In 2016, we travelled to Arusha, Tanzania, where we hosted a two-week arts camp in partnership with the Umoja Centre, and held workshops at the International School of Moshi, Kiboroloni Secondary School, Lohada and Samaritan Village orphanages, Tumaini University Makumira, Ujamaa Children's Home, and Uraki Secondary School. In our lessons, students used every day objects to create instruments, with which they composed new works, by understanding music as layers of bass lines, melodies, and ostinati. The classes were built from the same curriculum as our 2013 project, with a deeper focus on sustainability and cross-cultural connection through skill-building arts empowerment classes.
